Chiropractic Explained

The chiropractic profession is a health care profession that mainly treats disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and also addresses how these disorders can ultimately affect overall body health. Some of the most common conditions treated with chiropractic care low back pain, mid back pain, neck pain, headaches, and joint pain in the arms or legs.

The main practitioner in the chiropractic profession is the Doctor of Chiropractic who is often referred to as a chiropractor and in some locations chiropractic physicians. Chiropractors typically utilize hands-on or manual treatments after they take a complete history, perform an examination, and diagnose their patient. Chiropractors have a diverse set of skills in diagnosis and treatment of a variety of conditions. Chiropractors receive education and training in chiropractic adjustments, rehabilitative and therapeutic exercises, nutritional, and dietary recommendation as methods of treatment.

Doctors of chiropractic most commonly utilize adjustments which are also referred to as manipulation for treatment. The goal of a joint manipulation is rather simple in that after a chiropractor finds a joint that has too little motion, they apply controlled force adjustments to the joint(s) in order to help restore normal joint function. Joints tend to have too little motion or hypomobility due to a variety of factors. Muscle spasm can cause a joint to have too little motion. Scar tissue in and around muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia can restrict joint motion. Sudden accidents (such as a fall) can cause a joint to eventually lose motion. Also, overuse injuries from repetitive stresses (like typing on a keyboard all day, or lifting a child with poor form over and over) can cause scar tissue to form leading to physical and chemical changes within the body. These changes often alter the function of muscles and joints in the body. This altered function usually results in pain. So, a chiropractic adjustment tends to restore a joint to normal functional status. Chiropractic adjustments are proven to be safe and only rarely do they cause discomfort. The discomfort might come in the form of some minor soreness after the adjustment similar to the soreness experienced after a workout. The soreness usually subsides within a day or two.

Often, chiropractic care is considered “stand-alone” care. For example, a patient that develops neck pain or low back pain for the first time can seek the services of a chiropractor alone. Sometimes chiropractors work together with other healthcare providers such as medical doctors and/or physical therapists providing a comprehensive approach to patient care. Chiropractors are also trained to recognize conditions that would require a referral to another health-care practitioner for treatment

Doctors of chiropractic may order diagnostic tests such as x-rays, MRIs, CT scans, laboratory work, and more to determine a source of pain/injury. Chiropractors may take vital signs, perform orthopedics/neurological tests, and chiropractic specific examinations to help diagnose their patients’ conditions.
